The Lip is finally back after a month’s delay. I’ve been struggling with gentoo but I finally finished recording and editing this episode. This week I install Xwindows, I get wireless working with wifi-radar, and I set my printer up. There will be a part 4 also. I still have to install gnome and another window manager. This is a bit shorter than most episodes, sort of in compensation for the 2 hour marathon last episode.

This week I do the second Gentoo episode. I configure and compile the kernel and do some system configuration and finally get to boot into the new gentoo installation. All this takes almost 2 hours. That’s long for a podcast but I wanted to get at least that far by the second episode so that I can cover XWindows installation in the third. I recorded the episode around the time that the mailman comes so you can hear my dog barking in the background for about 10 or 15 minutes. I didn’t realize at the time that the mic would pick it up so clearly. Hopefully it’s not too distracting.

I begin installing gentoo in this episode with the 2007.0 minimal install cd. This will be the first of several episodes on gentoo because installing gentoo is a bit tricky and takes more time than most distros. I install the stage 3 tarball and download and install portage, the gentoo package system. The episode ends just before I install and configure the kernel. This should be a very educational series of episodes.

This week I do the follow-up to the Blag 70000 installation. Some of it has the background hiss and some is clear because I managed to get my old Dell laptop working with puppy linux on a usb flash drive. I use it to record the intro and email sections. Future episodes should be much clearer. I cover installing totally free versions of flash (aka gnash) and java, adding a user account with command line and gui tools, and the installation of kde and enlightenment DR17. Oh yeah, I also read a story.

The Lip is finally back. I’m sorry for the delay, the computer that I was recording on died and I had a hard time finding something to replace it with. I purchased a usb sound card and that’s what I’m using for this podcast. Unfortunately it isn’t a perfect solution. There’s an audible hiss in the background, but I wanted to get a podcast out so this is the best I could do.
This week I install Blag 70000. Blag is a distro I’ve been using on and off for two years now. It’s one of only six distros recommended by the Free Software Foundation because of it’s dedication to free software. I install the main system and get wireless working.

I’m sorry, the break that I’ve been taking from the show is longer than I anticipated. I won’t be able to get a show out until after the first of the year. If there is anyone out there who would like to record an installation, or any other install-related content, email me at thelip@gnu-linux.us and let me know. If it’s really good then you can be a co-host.

I’m sorry I haven’t been able to get a show out in the past two weeks or so. I’ve been involved with something that has been taking up my time. But take heart! I haven’t abandoned this podcast! A new one will come out soon.

This week I will be installing openSuse version 10.3, just released. I will install the Gnome single cd version. I’ll get the system up and running on my Acer laptop and I’ll investigate installing packages through Yast. I’ll also get wireless working after much frustration and beating my head against the wall a few times.

This week I’ll be finishing up with Slackware 12. I’ll get wifi-radar to work for the regular user through a button in the kde panel. Then I’ll get cups to work with my printer server. I’ll also investigate slackpkg, the tool for updating slackware. And I’ll install wine and set up the windows version of AcrossLite to work with it.

Today I’ll be doing the follow-up to my initial Slackware 12 installation. I’ll get Slackware working with my wireless card using wifi-radar, and I’ll explore the various ways of getting packages installed on Slackware. I’ll explore using precompiled packages from LinuxPackages.net and Slacky, I’ll use checkinstall together with compiling from source code in order to create Slackware packages and I’ll use the slackbuild scripts at slackbuild.org to create and install slack packages.

This episode I install Slackware 12 on an Acer laptop. I get the main system installed along with kde, and I install the synaptics touchpad driver. I’m anticipating investigating the different ways to install software on Slackware, especially the new Slackbuild website. Ben had to take this week off. He will follow up his Sabayon installation either next week of the week after.

This week I’m covering Sabayon Linux. This distribution of Linux is based off of Gentoo Linux. It aims to be newbie friendly. But it’s also great for customization and tweaking. You compile all packages from source using a BSD ports style package management system.
Stay tuned to hear all my screw ups and rants.

This week Ed LaBonte finishes up with Arch Linux. He gets wireless working with the edimax wireless card, installs the proprietary ati driver for the ati radeon video card, gets the printer and alsa working, and more. Most of the direction comes from the arch linux wiki page http://wiki.archlinux.org

This week Ed LaBonte installs Arch Linux with the 2007.5 ftp installation cd on his new Acer Aspire 5100 laptop. He will install the basic system with the cd and then install X, fluxbox, and firefox with Arch’s package manager: pacman. And he will configure the ati video card on the laptop using the open source kernel module.
Note: I’m sorry it’s so late. I’m struggling with the new laptop which I used to edit it. The sound quality is not as good as past episodes, I don’t know why.

This week I cover trouble shooting the boot manager, both grub and lilo. Configuring the boot manager is an important step in any linux installation. Though most new distros make this step easy, it is still possible to run into problems, especially if you are dual booting with Windows or another linux distro.
I create the problem by uninstalling the boot manager from a system dual booting debian and zenwalk. I then reinstall first lilo and then grub using the installation cds to access the system, and set them up to dual boot the two distros. Another fun filled, mistake filled episode of the Lip.
