Episode 49 #!Crunchbang

Posted in Crunchbang, Ubuntu at 7:54 am by ewlabonte

Well, the Lip is back. I apologize for the long delay. This episode I cover the installation of Crunchbang Linux. Crunchbang is based on Ubuntu Intrepid and uses Openbox for it’s window manager. You also get to hear my wife and I sniping at each other as I try to get her to participate in the podcast. Great fun for the whole family 😉 I hope to be more diligent at getting these out in the future.

Episode 35 Kubuntu Feisty Fawn part 1

Posted in Kubuntu, Ubuntu at 8:01 am by ewlabonte

I am postponing my Ubuntu Feisty follow-up podcast for another week. This week co-host Ben Cheever will be installing Kubuntu Feisty Fawn on his Dell Latitude laptop. He will setup wireless, install Automatix, and go over some of the features of KDE that make it such a popular desktop environment.

LIP 12: Ubuntu hibernation and summary

Posted in Ubuntu at 5:31 am by serge

Our fourth, and therefore, final episode on Ubuntu. All we have left to do is check if we can get hibernation or sleep to work under Dapper Drake. To our very pleasant surprise all this takes is to actually see if it works – and it does out of the box.

Based on our highly scientific scoring system Ubuntu is awarded 4 out of a potential 5 penguins – which puts it tied for the lead with Suse. Definitely leaves us wanting to explore this distro more, but time to move on to our fourth distribution starting with the next episode. And, this will be the one and only Slackware. Sure to be an experience, so please tune in next week.

LIP 11: Ubuntu and Vim 7.0

Posted in Ubuntu, Vim at 4:18 am by serge

Week three with Ubuntu and some new features to the show. Before we continue on with the exploration of Ubunutu we do some listener feedback and talk about the future of the show. We also add a segment on linux toys, where we review the iAudio U3 music player. Tasty.

The main segment has us trying to get Vim 7.0 out of the main repositories for Ubuntu. Doesn’t quite work so we end up having to compile, which works just fine.

We run out of time before we get around to seeing if we can get sleep to work on the lappie. One more week to go on Ubuntu so hopefully it will happen next week.

Oh, and we also talk about the tentative lineup for the next nine months and distros:

  1. Slackware
  2. SimplyMepis
  3. Gentoo
  4. Centos
  5. Debian
  6. pcbsd
  7. Freespire
  8. Quantian
  9. Fedora core

If your favorite isn’t on the list, or if you want to reorder things, just send us some feedback.

LIP 10: Ubuntu Drake is Dapper

Posted in Live-cd, Ubuntu, Wireless, X at 3:30 am by serge

Second round with trying to install off the livecd results in success, eventually. (If only our neighbors with the free wireless access point would turn the thing on for show time!!)

On our third try (1 for Edgy, 2 for Dapper), wireless gets nailed down and the install goes off pretty smoothly. Great hardware detection in the installer gets us sound, wireless and X mojo flowing.

We also transition to a Linux based setup for producing the podcast, so there might be a few bumps as we get it all dialed in. If you can read this, well, at least we got over a few of those bumps.

LIP 09: Ubuntu: the good, the bad, and the ugly

Posted in Initial Install, Live-cd, Ubuntu at 3:13 am by serge

Moving to a new distro, tonight’s show finds us breaking out Ubuntu, a distro that definitely has got a lot of buzz.

We begin with our first live-cd install and find that Ubuntu Dapper works pretty slick out of the box/cd, that is, compared to Suse or Mandriva. We get X working, sound, and the wireless card all detected via the live cd.

Things get even more interesting when we try to do the install off of the live-cd. First we spend a lot of time trying to get the partition scheme dialed in. (This does buy us some airtime to talk about the origins of the show however). Then we learn that although the proprietary nic is recognized, configuration is a different matter all together. Even more excitement is to be found in the lan connection which seems to have given up the ghost.

Not quite what we expected for our initial date with Ubuntu. But fortunately, this is only show 1 of 4 on this distro.

Oh, and Nelson Mandela makes a guest appearance, so you have to be sure to listen in to catch that.
