Second round with trying to install off the livecd results in success, eventually. (If only our neighbors with the free wireless access point would turn the thing on for show time!!)
On our third try (1 for Edgy, 2 for Dapper), wireless gets nailed down and the install goes off pretty smoothly. Great hardware detection in the installer gets us sound, wireless and X mojo flowing.
We also transition to a Linux based setup for producing the podcast, so there might be a few bumps as we get it all dialed in. If you can read this, well, at least we got over a few of those bumps.

Moving to a new distro, tonight’s show finds us breaking out Ubuntu, a distro that definitely has got a lot of buzz.
We begin with our first live-cd install and find that Ubuntu Dapper works pretty slick out of the box/cd, that is, compared to Suse or Mandriva. We get X working, sound, and the wireless card all detected via the live cd.
Things get even more interesting when we try to do the install off of the live-cd. First we spend a lot of time trying to get the partition scheme dialed in. (This does buy us some airtime to talk about the origins of the show however). Then we learn that although the proprietary nic is recognized, configuration is a different matter all together. Even more excitement is to be found in the lan connection which seems to have given up the ghost.
Not quite what we expected for our initial date with Ubuntu. But fortunately, this is only show 1 of 4 on this distro.
Oh, and Nelson Mandela makes a guest appearance, so you have to be sure to listen in to catch that.

Our fourth show with Mandriva finds us bailing on the wireless, but finding some joy in having sleep available after some exploration of KDE options.
Overall, we are not highly impressed with Mandriva and this is reflected in only 3 out of 5 penguins in our highly scientific rating system. Compared to Suse, which garnered 4 penguins, this means Mandriva is in last place. Or if you are an optimist, second place.
With the second month of weekly shows under our belt, along with two distros, we move on to victu… err I mean.. distribution 3 next week. Will it be Ubunutu? Tune in to find out.

In a rare display of common sense, I realize that all three installation cds are needed, not just the first one. I am rewarded with a very nice X and KDE install. Kudos to the Mandriva team for a very pretty graphical installer.
We also come to find that Vim 7.0 comes installed out of the box. But this is the old school vim, terminal only. We then take a shot at installing the gui version and, after a little fumbling, get it working.
We then move on to the wireless card and find ourselves still fumbling around when the clock ran out. Will we get the wireless and sleep working before the fourth and final Mandriva episode? Tune in next week to find out.
