Third episode with the Core keeps the love coming with a fairly straightforward install of the firmware for our wireless card. With this Fedora continues to impress.
We also spend a little time talking about an adventure of replacing a second hard drive on my Etch desktop, and we take some user feedback on board with our new Distribution Scorecards.

We got this one recorded and posted to the feeds early, but didn’t get to update the blog here till a day after the “release” due to travel.
Fedora continues to impress as we get Vim 7.0 gui installed with the package management system, learn that sleep works out of the box and discover some cool eye candy in Gnome 2.16.

The first segment on our fifth distro greets us with pretty blue desktops littered with double-helix type thingies. The intial install goes generally smoothly, using 3 cd-images that we cleverly had downloaded prior to tonight’s show. Since initial installs take some time, we fill in the dead air with some thoughts about Rockbox on an ipod nano and the ogg goodness it enables.
Fedora is off to a very nice start. Looking forward to the next three episodes where we check out getting wireless, sleep and the package manager to do their things.

We say goodbye to the oldest living Linux distribution: Slackware. Unfortunately, our parting is bittersweet as we see much to love in Slack, yet some persistent hangs in X keep us from getting to fully explore this distro. We spend most of our time trying workarounds for this X problem at a cost of not being able to get wireless or sleep nailed down. On the plus side, the installer is solid, Vim 7.0 (console and gui) is there out of the box and the package manager is very clean. So we give Slack 3 out of 5 on our rating system.
Next up: Fedora Core 6.0. Be sure to tune in next week.
