Episode 37 Arch Linux part 1

Posted in Arch Linux at 7:43 am by ewlabonte

This week Ed LaBonte installs Arch Linux with the 2007.5 ftp installation cd on his new Acer Aspire 5100 laptop. He will install the basic system with the cd and then install X, fluxbox, and firefox with Arch’s package manager: pacman. And he will configure the ati video card on the laptop using the open source kernel module.

Note: I’m sorry it’s so late. I’m struggling with the new laptop which I used to edit it. The sound quality is not as good as past episodes, I don’t know why.

Episode 35 Kubuntu Feisty Fawn part 1

Posted in Kubuntu, Ubuntu at 8:01 am by ewlabonte

I am postponing my Ubuntu Feisty follow-up podcast for another week. This week co-host Ben Cheever will be installing Kubuntu Feisty Fawn on his Dell Latitude laptop. He will setup wireless, install Automatix, and go over some of the features of KDE that make it such a popular desktop environment.

Episode 34 Grub and Lilo

Posted in Bootloaders at 5:38 am by ewlabonte

This week I cover trouble shooting the boot manager, both grub and lilo. Configuring the boot manager is an important step in any linux installation. Though most new distros make this step easy, it is still possible to run into problems, especially if you are dual booting with Windows or another linux distro.

I create the problem by uninstalling the boot manager from a system dual booting debian and zenwalk. I then reinstall first lilo and then grub using the installation cds to access the system, and set them up to dual boot the two distros. Another fun filled, mistake filled episode of the Lip.

Episode 32 Zenwalk 4.6.1 part 2

Posted in Zenwalk at 9:07 am by ewlabonte

This week I’ll get the printer server working, set up ssh, download the sourcecode for and compile j-pilot, and set up my Palm Z22 to sync with it. I’ll also take a look at netpkg, the zenwalk package manager. This will wind up my look at zenwalk. Next week will be a newbie friendly episode. I’ll cover the installation of ubuntu feisty fawn, with step by step instructions for new users.

Episode 31 Zenwalk 4.6.1 part 1

Posted in Zenwalk at 7:30 am by ewlabonte

This week I install Zenwalk 4.6.1, a lightweight Slackware derivative. Zenwalk installs from 1 cd and uses xfce for it’s default desktop environment. I install the main system, add zenwalk to the grub menu, get networking set up with networkconfig, and fix a buggy environment by rebooting ;-). Catch another error filled episode of the lip.

Episode 30 Debian Etch part 2

Posted in Debian at 3:11 pm by ewlabonte

This week we continue with installing ssh on Debian Etch. After that I set up printing with Cups over a printer server. I then install alsa, and fail to install Automatix2. In lieu of installing Automatix2 I install flash and Java directly and that finishes up our look at Debian.

Next week:

Zenwalk 4.6.1

Episode 29 Debian Etch Part 1

Posted in Debian at 5:19 am by ewlabonte

The Lip is under new management. My name is Ed LaBonte and I’ll be taking over for Serge. The first episode (#29) is up and ready for download. This has been a learning experience and that’s reflected in this episode. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but I wanted to get something out after the long delay. I cover Debian Etch, the installation of the basic system using a minimalist method with the netinstall installation cd. Next I install X.org, gnome, and Iceweasel. The format for the podcast is still up in the air and I hope that I can get feedback from listeners to help me make this podcast useful to the community.

I want to thank Serge for letting me use his website and storage space for putting out this podcast.

Annoucement: thelip needs a new home

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:55 pm by serge

Due to major changes at my “day job” I have been unable to continue getting LIP episodes out, not to mention posting a note about the delays until now.

The situation is unlikely to change anytime soon so, in the spirit of open source, I am asking any interested podcaster out there if they would like to take over the LIP. If you are please drop an email at the contact link on the sidebar.

LIP 28: Gentoo Summary

Posted in Gentoo at 4:26 am by serge

Our grand adventure with Gentoo must, alas, come to end with tonight’s show. Given the time required for the emerge-download-compile dance, we had to leave three of our four distro checks for the last Gentoo show. So tonight we set out to get Gvim vimming, wireless wired, and sleep sleeping. Since it is the fourth of four episodes for Gentoo we also wind down with a summary of this grand distribution.

LIP 27: Gentoo Linux – Getting X Up and Running

Posted in Gentoo, X at 5:56 am by serge

We continue on with our Gentoo adventure, setting out to get X11 configured. But first we are forced to detour to revisit network configuration. After that scenic trip, we get even more familiar with emerge and the compile machine that Gentoo is. We are rewarded with a visit back to one of your host’s favorite (but long ignored) window managers: Icewm.

LIP 26: Gentoo Part Deux

Posted in Gentoo at 5:33 am by serge

After what appeared to be success with the LiveCD install last episode, we
learn that our early optimism was unfounded. Bascially the install didn’t
quite finish the way we thought it had, so we got a chance to get more first
hand love from Gentoo. Like 8-9 hours worth of love.

Tonight’s show captures the last of many attempts to get Gentoo installed. Did it work? Well, you have to tune in to find out now won’t you?

LIP 25: Gentoo – Initial LiveCD Install

Posted in Gentoo, Initial Install, Live-cd at 2:46 pm by serge

We kick off our seventh distro of the show going with a live cd install of Gentoo Linux. This ubergeek distro greets us with a very slick graphical installer that surprises us given what we’ve heard about Gentoo’s close to the metal nature. We emerge from the installer with a new respect for this distro and look forward to more exploration in the coming three episodes.

Also discussed are portable music players and Linux as well as a tip for Konqueror users.

LIP 24: Mepis 6.0 wireless and wrap up

Posted in Mepis, Wireless at 3:11 am by serge

Winding down our coverage of Mepis in this episode. We take a stab at getting wireless configured on the LIP laptop under Mepis. Some surprises are encountered along the way.

We also talk about some Linux adventures, Moodle vs. Blackboard in the ivory tower, some Rockbox stuff, feedback from our most excellent listeners, and a promo for a new podcast GoingLinux. Lot’s o stuff to cover inside this week’s LIP.

LIP 23: Mepis 6.0, sleeping beauty?

Posted in Mepis at 12:50 am by serge

We had to move our regular recording time to the weekend due to yet another change in your host’s weekly schedule. So Sundays it is from here on out. Promise. And sorry for those of you who checked in on Thursday night – in case you didn’t get the memo, Sunday is the new Thursday. Wait there was no memo. Sundays, Sundays Sundays.

Part 3 of 4 on Mepis and we hunker down to get sleep working on the test laptop. Turns out sleep isn’t the problem, but Mepis seems to have a problem with waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

We also talk about more Linux applications in your host’s rekindled love affair with the one true operating system on his desktop. Specifically, we talk about ditching Gmail and Google Calendar for the likes of Mutt, Wyrd, and Remind.

LIP 22: Mepis – Compling Vim 7.0

Posted in Mepis, Package Management, Vim at 5:18 am by serge

Part 2 of 4 on Mepis and we see if Vim 7.0 is in the house. Is it? Well let’s just say we get to explore the package manager (which is excellent) and test out our old-school-roll-your-own-compile-it chops.

(Disclaimer: Host is enjoying the combined arrival of a new semester and major sinus headaches (coupled with pain killing medication) so tonight’s show might be a bit more stream of consciousness-like than normal).

LIP 21: Mepis 6.0 – Initial Install

Posted in Mepis at 5:22 am by serge

Tonight we start a series of four episodes on Mepis 6.0, our sixth distribution thus far.

The main segment focuses on the initial install experience where we learn that good documentation can be incredibly useful. Especially when you read it.

Despite a case of pilot error, Mepis is off to a great start.

We also describe rolling our own Python 2.5 under Fedora 6.0 (to fill the time during the Mepis package copying).

LIP 20: Fedora Core 6 Wrap Up

Posted in Fedora at 5:02 am by serge

Fedora has gone from success to success so we are sad to have to wrap up this distribution to say goodbye. In our summary it earns a perfect 5 out of 5.

We also describe setting up a dual headed desktop under Fedora Core. First episode of 2007, and we are off to a great start.
