LIP 19.5: Annoucement of New Time/Date

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:56 am by serge

First off, happy new year to all LIP listeners!

Second, with the new year my work schedule has changed somewhat and this means I need to move the show to Thursday nights instead of Tuesdays. I will still be shooting for weekly releases, just on a different night. So tune back in this Thursday for our fourth episode on Fedora Core.

For those of you who want to hear the announcement, just download the file below.

LIP 19: Fedora Core, Wireless

Posted in Fedora, Wireless at 3:48 am by serge

Third episode with the Core keeps the love coming with a fairly straightforward install of the firmware for our wireless card. With this Fedora continues to impress.

We also spend a little time talking about an adventure of replacing a second hard drive on my Etch desktop, and we take some user feedback on board with our new Distribution Scorecards.

LIP 18: Fedora Core: Sleep, Packages and Eye Candy

Posted in Fedora, Package Management at 5:38 pm by serge

We got this one recorded and posted to the feeds early, but didn’t get to update the blog here till a day after the “release” due to travel.

Fedora continues to impress as we get Vim 7.0 gui installed with the package management system, learn that sleep works out of the box and discover some cool eye candy in Gnome 2.16.

LIP 17: Fedora Core 6.0 Initial Install

Posted in Fedora, Initial Install at 4:58 am by serge

The first segment on our fifth distro greets us with pretty blue desktops littered with double-helix type thingies. The intial install goes generally smoothly, using 3 cd-images that we cleverly had downloaded prior to tonight’s show. Since initial installs take some time, we fill in the dead air with some thoughts about Rockbox on an ipod nano and the ogg goodness it enables.

Fedora is off to a very nice start. Looking forward to the next three episodes where we check out getting wireless, sleep and the package manager to do their things.

LIP 16: Slackware 11.0 Farewell

Posted in Slackware at 4:50 am by serge

We say goodbye to the oldest living Linux distribution: Slackware. Unfortunately, our parting is bittersweet as we see much to love in Slack, yet some persistent hangs in X keep us from getting to fully explore this distro. We spend most of our time trying workarounds for this X problem at a cost of not being able to get wireless or sleep nailed down. On the plus side, the installer is solid, Vim 7.0 (console and gui) is there out of the box and the package manager is very clean. So we give Slack 3 out of 5 on our rating system.

Next up: Fedora Core 6.0. Be sure to tune in next week.

LIP 15: Slackware 11.0 Migration from a 2.4 to 2.6 kernel

Posted in Slackware at 5:37 am by serge

We start over with Slack since the last install was randomly freezing up in X. We try to go with a 2.6 kernel to see if this fixes things. Does it? Well now, you just have to listen in to find out.

Oh, and we also revise the tentative lineup for the next eight months and distros:

  1. Fedora Core
  2. SimplyMepis
  3. Gentoo
  4. Mint
  5. Debian
  6. pcbsd
  7. Freespire
  8. Quantian

LIP 14: Slackware 11.0 postinstallation exploration

Posted in Slackware, X at 4:43 am by serge

We continue our exploration of Slackware by changing runlevels to boot into a graphical display manager. We also learn how to add a user from the command line. Additionally, we make some time for listener feedback this week.

Posted in Initial Install, Slackware at 6:20 am by serge

The start of our fourth month of weekly shows finds us visiting the oldest living Linux distribution: Slackware. This episode focuses on the intial install, which goes well. During the package install component we use some  time to  cover further issues with our Linux Toy: iAudio U3.

LIP 12: Ubuntu hibernation and summary

Posted in Ubuntu at 5:31 am by serge

Our fourth, and therefore, final episode on Ubuntu. All we have left to do is check if we can get hibernation or sleep to work under Dapper Drake. To our very pleasant surprise all this takes is to actually see if it works – and it does out of the box.

Based on our highly scientific scoring system Ubuntu is awarded 4 out of a potential 5 penguins – which puts it tied for the lead with Suse. Definitely leaves us wanting to explore this distro more, but time to move on to our fourth distribution starting with the next episode. And, this will be the one and only Slackware. Sure to be an experience, so please tune in next week.

LIP 11: Ubuntu and Vim 7.0

Posted in Ubuntu, Vim at 4:18 am by serge

Week three with Ubuntu and some new features to the show. Before we continue on with the exploration of Ubunutu we do some listener feedback and talk about the future of the show. We also add a segment on linux toys, where we review the iAudio U3 music player. Tasty.

The main segment has us trying to get Vim 7.0 out of the main repositories for Ubuntu. Doesn’t quite work so we end up having to compile, which works just fine.

We run out of time before we get around to seeing if we can get sleep to work on the lappie. One more week to go on Ubuntu so hopefully it will happen next week.

Oh, and we also talk about the tentative lineup for the next nine months and distros:

  1. Slackware
  2. SimplyMepis
  3. Gentoo
  4. Centos
  5. Debian
  6. pcbsd
  7. Freespire
  8. Quantian
  9. Fedora core

If your favorite isn’t on the list, or if you want to reorder things, just send us some feedback.

LIP 10: Ubuntu Drake is Dapper

Posted in Live-cd, Ubuntu, Wireless, X at 3:30 am by serge

Second round with trying to install off the livecd results in success, eventually. (If only our neighbors with the free wireless access point would turn the thing on for show time!!)

On our third try (1 for Edgy, 2 for Dapper), wireless gets nailed down and the install goes off pretty smoothly. Great hardware detection in the installer gets us sound, wireless and X mojo flowing.

We also transition to a Linux based setup for producing the podcast, so there might be a few bumps as we get it all dialed in. If you can read this, well, at least we got over a few of those bumps.

LIP 09: Ubuntu: the good, the bad, and the ugly

Posted in Initial Install, Live-cd, Ubuntu at 3:13 am by serge

Moving to a new distro, tonight’s show finds us breaking out Ubuntu, a distro that definitely has got a lot of buzz.

We begin with our first live-cd install and find that Ubuntu Dapper works pretty slick out of the box/cd, that is, compared to Suse or Mandriva. We get X working, sound, and the wireless card all detected via the live cd.

Things get even more interesting when we try to do the install off of the live-cd. First we spend a lot of time trying to get the partition scheme dialed in. (This does buy us some airtime to talk about the origins of the show however). Then we learn that although the proprietary nic is recognized, configuration is a different matter all together. Even more excitement is to be found in the lan connection which seems to have given up the ghost.

Not quite what we expected for our initial date with Ubuntu. But fortunately, this is only show 1 of 4 on this distro.

Oh, and Nelson Mandela makes a guest appearance, so you have to be sure to listen in to catch that.

LIP 08: Mandriva – sleep good, wireless bad

Posted in Mandriva, Wireless at 3:21 am by serge

Our fourth show with Mandriva finds us bailing on the wireless, but finding some joy in having sleep available after some exploration of KDE options.

Overall, we are not highly impressed with Mandriva and this is reflected in only 3 out of 5 penguins in our highly scientific rating system. Compared to Suse, which garnered 4 penguins, this means Mandriva is in last place. Or if you are an optimist, second place.

With the second month of weekly shows under our belt, along with two distros, we move on to victu… err I mean.. distribution 3 next week. Will it be Ubunutu? Tune in to find out.

LIP 07: Mandriva and X, third time’s a charm

Posted in Mandriva, Wireless, X at 3:37 am by serge

In a rare display of common sense, I realize that all three installation cds are needed, not just the first one. I am rewarded with a very nice X and KDE install. Kudos to the Mandriva team for a very pretty graphical installer.

We also come to find that Vim 7.0 comes installed out of the box. But this is the old school vim, terminal only. We then take a shot at installing the gui version and, after a little fumbling, get it working.

We then move on to the wireless card and find ourselves still fumbling around when the clock ran out. Will we get the wireless and sleep working before the fourth and final Mandriva episode? Tune in next week to find out.

LIP 06: Mandriva take two

Posted in Mandriva, X at 4:16 am by serge

After a quick install from last week we revisit trying to get X going on Mandriva. We try different approaches, reconfiguring our Xorg.conf file, some google dancing, and another reinistall. Still no joy. We run out of time before we run out of will, so we shall try again next week. Oh, we also spend some time thinking about the world of Linux podcasts and offer ideas about what might be missing in the podcast soup. (And we get a clue about bitrates so the file size shrinks magically).

LIP 05: Installing Mandriva

Posted in Initial Install, Mandriva at 3:13 am by serge

With one distribution under our belt, we move on to Mandriva. Things go pretty smoothly in what is a very quick 21 minute install – from reboot to reboot. Unfortunately, we learn that lilo is not grub and that Xorg has gone awol. Well, it looks like we have plenty to do in the next three shows on this distribution – stay tuned!

LIP 04: Summarizing our first distro: OpenSuse 10.1

Posted in Suse, Vim at 3:58 am by serge

Our fourth show brings us to our summary evaluation of OpenSuse. Before we say goodby to our first distro, we do a source install of Vim 7.0, just because we can. Along the way we set up a few aliases  for good measure. We talk a bit about the history of Suse, the community and how our Windows relatives found our test machine to work. We close with our first summary score of a distribution (sorry you have to listen to learn how many stars Suse got) as well as a brief discussion of the show’s philosophy and plans for the future.

Posted in Debian, G5, Suse, Vim at 4:38 am by serge

Our third week with Suse finds us exploring the Yast2 package manager in search of the latest version of the one true editor Vim. Alas, we run into rpm hell and our first real speedbump with Suse. We also discuss the revamping of thelip Lab hardware, and a side project attempting to install Debian on a Power Mac G5.

Posted in Package Management, Suse, Wireless at 4:31 am by serge

The honeymoon with Suse continues, albeit with some interesting twists, as we set about configuring the wireless card that was not configured during the initial install. In the process we explore package management with Suse and find that patience is a virtue.
